What is Zakat?
Zakat is one of the five pillars of Islam — an obligatory form of charity for every Muslim whose wealth exceeds the Nisab threshold for one full lunar year. The word "Zakat" means "purification," as paying Zakat purifies your wealth and soul.
What is Nisab?
Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth a Muslim must possess before being obligated to pay Zakat. It is set at the value of either 87.48 grams (7.5 tola) of gold or 612.36 grams (52.5 tola) of silver.

How to Calculate Your Zakat
- List all Zakatable assets: cash, savings, gold, silver, investments, business stock
- Subtract your liabilities (debts, loans payable)
- If the net amount exceeds Nisab and you've held it for one lunar year, pay 2.5%
Example: Total assets PKR 800,000 − Debts PKR 200,000 = PKR 600,000. Zakat = PKR 600,000 × 2.5% = PKR 15,000
